HISTORY
The Vargas diamond was found unwittingly by the two diamond diggers Joaquim Venancio Tiago and Manoel Miguel Domingues on August 13, 1938. The diamond was discovered from the gravels of the San Antonio river in the Coromandel district of Minas Gerais.
The alternative version of the diamond's discovery is that the enormous shining rough stone was picked up by one among the two farmers who were walking along the path of a dry river bed as the stone glittered in the sunlight. The shinning stone turned out to be 726.6-carat massive rough diamond which is the largest ever found diamond which was discovered in Brazil. It became the 4th largest gem quality rough diamond and the largest alluvial rough diamond at the time of its discovery. But now the Vargas diamond is the 9th largest rough diamond discovered in the world.
