Gems acquire more or less brightness, actively, varied colouring, and transparency, in proportion to their single or double refraction, and to the polarization of light.1. Adamantine brightness: that which gives out the splendor peculiar to the diamond.
2. Vitreous brightness: that which resemble glass.
3. Resinous brightness: that which shine as if the surface had been rubbed with oil.
