Brightness,colour and transparency of gemstones

Gems acquire more or less brightness, actively, varied colouring, and transparency, in proportion to their single or double refraction, and to the polarization of light.

The brightness of gems may be illustrious as follows:

1. Adamantine brightness: that which gives out the splendor peculiar to the diamond.
2. Vitreous brightness: that which resemble glass.
3. Resinous brightness: that which shine as if the surface had been rubbed with oil.
